"and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men and women who will be able to teach others also." 2 Timothy 2:2
The apostle Paul commissions Timothy with a simple task – “I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word...” (2 Timothy 4:1-2).
Given that at the time many were deserting the gospel and leaving the church, why this of all tasks? Surely there were more exciting strategies for bringing people back?
But no. Paul knew that God works as God's word is spread far and wide. And so he says to Timothy “remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead… as preached in my gospel, for which I am suffering, bound with chains like a criminal. But the word of God is not bound! Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.” (2v8-10).
So Timothy was to faithfully hold out God’s word as the way God brings people to salvation and eternal glory. And to pass the baton on to the next generation who would do just the same - “what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also” (2v2).
It is no different today. God has not changed; nor has the fundamental problem with the world – its simple, desperate need is to hear the word of truth, through which God will call people to salvation and cause them to persevere to eternal glory. And so we still need to pass the baton on to faithful men and women, who will pass the baton on to faithful men and women.
