The project to restore our beautiful spire and tower is underway. These repairs will protect the historic architecture and enable safe access to the garden for all to enjoy. We anticipate the works to run from February to Spring 2026. We apologise for any inconvenience during this time.

News and updates
Since the start of works, the following progress has been made:
- Site fully established
- Scaffolding erected externally on North, East, and partially West elevations up to louvred windows.
- Internal scaffolding, including back propping beneath North elevation and birdcage scaffold, installed.
- Netting of the spire removed as scaffolding progresses.
- Steeplejack ladders and window guards removed; internal chimney dismantled.
Scaffolding has progressed on the North, East, and part of the West elevations up to the louvred windows, with work continuing towards the spire. Internally, back propping and a birdcage scaffold have been installed. The scaffolding is expected to be completed by the 25th of April so the restoration work can begin.
• Scaffolding was completed and handed over to the contractor on 16th of May.
• Gable wall scaffolding is currently being designed.
• An asbestos survey of the tower and spire is happening on the 22nd of May.
• Stone cleaning to commence on the 26th of May
The initial stone cleaning is complete and the repointing has been started. The architect has marked up stones to replace. The gable scaffolding has been designed.
The chancel gable scaffolding has been completed and the cleaning finished. Spire and tower stones to be replaced have been identified. Grotesque figures sketch designs have been proposed. Clay mock-ups will be prepared by September.
Clay models are bing produced for the grotesque figure designs. The architect will review these in early September for the stone carving to commence.
Mortar joints are being cut out and nearly complete in order for repointing to commence soon.
Various stone and mortar samples have been presented and approved.
11 stones are to be replaced at the top of the spire soon after which the scaffolding will start to come down – meaning visible progress from the ground!
New stones have been delivered and being installed now.
Tower has been raked out ready for repointing.
Lightening conductors to be fitted and tested.
The scaffolding level will be dropped after this.
Gablets are being detailed for manufacture.
New improved window guards on Lucarne windows to be added.
Abseilers have visited to cost for internal cleaning.
The top 4 out of 15 levels of scaffolding have been removed.
All of the detailing design to the stones has been completed. 170 stones are to be cut.
Architect has viewed half size clay models of the grotesques and approved the designs. They will take six weeks to carve.
Pointing completed.
Bargate stone installed to 40% of tower.
Cleaning of interior complete.
Stones replaced to level 41.
36 stones on site to be fitted.
One carved figure is almost complete and the other three clay models are being developed.
Re-pointing of the Tower completed.
• Repointing to the inside of the spire has completed.
• Window guards to the upper gablet completed.
• Chancel Gable pointing completed.
• Bell Maintenance completed (awaiting completion report)
• Remaining stones for the entire project have been delivered, except for 4x grotesque, beasts to the lower gablet window, and the pilaster base of the column to the doorway.
• Cross for chancel gable delivered.
- Further sections of scaffolding have now been removed.
- Carved figures have now been installed.
- Tower cornice installation completed.
- Bell has been inspected.
- Revised completion date 24 March.
- All the work has been generally completed.
- Scaffolding has all been removed.
- The site area is to be made good following.
- All the works are to be completed by Friday, 13th March 2026.
